«The Possibility of Spirits» er filmet i Bahia, Brasil, og er en essayfilm som sentrerer rundt det forvirrende fenomenet åndebesettelse.
Gjennom en poetisk samling av bilder og ord, er filmen et alternativ til dokumentarer som enten eksotifiserer åndebesettelse i spektakulære bilder, eller reduserer fenomenet gjennom forklarende prosa.
Besettelsesseremonier er filmet på nært hold, men bildene avslører først og fremst at vi ikke vet hva det er vi ser på.
Ord – fra filmskaperen, og hans samtalepartnere – får lov til å drive ut fra det meningsbærende. Når de prøver å forstå fenomenet, blir det til stillhet, latter eller skrik.
Filmen hyller det ekstraordinære i åndebesettelse, og inviterer seerne til å la seg forvirre og – i den forvirringen – vurdere muligheten for at ånder finnes.

Antropologisk film på museet.
Universitetsmuseet i Bergen presenterer antropologisk filmvisning på museet. I samarbeid med Institutt for sosialantropologi, Nordic Anthropological Film Association og Journal of Anthropological Films, inviterer vi filmelskere, filmskapere, antropologer og andre for å se antropologisk orienterte filmer, for å diskutere menneskelig kultur, estetikk, politikk og praksis for representasjon, og utvide blikket.
NAFA har siden grunnleggelsen på begynnelsen av 1970-tallet promotert etnografisk film gjennom den årlige NAFA-filmfestivalen, NAFAs filmarkiv og online filmsamling av antropologiske filmer. NAFA-arkivet oppbevares i dag på Universitetsmuseet i Bergen.

What is it that you film when you film a spirit?
Shot in Bahia (Brazil), The Possibility of Spirits is an essay film that keeps the baffling mystery of spirit possession center stage.
In a poetic assemblage of images and words, it offers an alternative for the kind of documentary that either exoticizes spirit possession in spectacular imagery, or extinguishes the wonder of the phenomenon in explanatory prose. Possession ceremonies are filmed in close up, but the images first and foremost reveal that we don't know what it is that we are looking at.
Words – of the filmmaker, as well as of his interlocutors – are allowed to drift out of meaning. Trying to grasp the phenomenon, they become silence, or laughter, or screaming. Paying tribute to the extra-ordinariness of its subject matter, this film invites viewers to allow themselves to be confused and – in that confusion – consider the possibility of spirits.

Anthropological film at the museum
The University Museum of Bergen presents anthropological film screenings at the museum. In collaboration with the Department of Social Anthropology, Nordic Anthropological Film Association and Journal of Anthropological Films, we bring together film lovers, film makers, anthropologists and others to watch anthropological orientated films, to discuss human culture, aesthetics, the politics and practices of representation, and to expand our visions.
NAFA has since its founding in the early 1970s, promoted ethnographic film through the annual NAFA film festival and its collection and online database of anthropological films. The NAFA archive is hosted by The University Museum of Bergen.
